Automated Model Building Competition at the University of Texas

June 17, 2019
Global AI company, SparkCognition, hosted a competition with $15,000 worth of scholarship prizes for students during the Spring 2019 semester at the University of Texas at Austin. The course was an introduction to data science and machine learning, and the students were given access to Darwin, SparkCognition's automated model building platform, with the challenge to use data science to solve a real-world problem. The projects ranged from scoring media bias and sensationalism in an article or on a website to predicting if two people will match on a dating service, and beyond. Darwin helped the students quickly move through the modeling process, allowing them to spend their time on important tasks like feature engineering and analyzing and presenting their results. The first place winner won a $10,000 scholarship prize, followed by $3,000 and $2,000 for the second and third place winners respectively.
